How to Deal with Holiday Stress

How-to-Deal-with-Holiday-Stress “It’s the most wonderful time of the year.” But even so, the holidays can cause serious stress. Parties, programs, shopping, (unwanted) house guests. It’s a recipe for a nervous breakdown, unless you have some coping methods. Here are three ways you can help deal with your holiday stress.

  1. Start Writing: One way to relieve stress is to keep a journal or write down your feelings. You may be surprised what is causing your stress. Writing offers a way to “vocalize” your distressing issues and begin to think about dealing with them effectively.
  1. Schedule Time to Relax: While it may seem nearly impossible during this busy season, take a moment to schedule a block of time just for you. We schedule waking up, commuting time, lunch time, our kids’ activities, and all of our holiday responsibilities. But it’s just as important to schedule time for yourself.

To effectively make use of this time, be sure to set ground rules. For example, don’t check email or voicemail. This time should be considered a well-deserved break. In fact, you may want to take this time to just think.

  1. Start Exercising: Exercise can be safe haven for you (if you do it right). Exercise will help with many issues. Not only will it reduce stress, it will also increase your health. It may actually help you handle stressful situations even better.

Before beginning any exercise routine, make sure you see your doctor. Your doctor can help identify appropriate exercises and provide pointers on how to get started.

Dealing with your holiday stress may not seem manageable, but it absolutely is. Find something that can give you pause, a chance to escape and regain a sense of self. And above all, enjoy the holiday season.
