Practice Development: Planning Part 1

Practice-Development-Planning-Part-1When it comes to growing a healthcare organization, many individuals are looking for creative ways to expand all while keeping patient care the top priority.  One great mechanism for such growth is physician dispensing.

Consider, for example, a pulmonologist developing a business plan for his clinic. As a way to expand and keep the patient the focus, the doctor decided to expand the scope of his practice by offering more general services. Now, the doctor is looking to add physician dispensing as another way to both add revenue and make medication access a simpler process for everyone involved.

In this case, the pulmonologist successfully balanced his approach to the business of medicine and the care of the patient. How?

  1. He put the patient at the center and built around him/her.  The doctor considered the surrounding demographic when developing his practice plan. Taking into account the needs of the population, he chose to provide services that were needed.
  2. He started small and looked for places to grow. By starting his expansion by adding new general services to his clinic, the doctor was able to make small steps towards growth. Now that those initial steps have been established and successful, the doctor is able to expand yet again through physician dispensing.
