Dispensing-FAQsIf you’re new to the world or even the idea of physician dispensing, you may have a lot of questions. Let us address a few of the most common questions we hear.

Q: Is dispensing the same as being a Pharmacy?

A: No. You will not have a pharmacy license and you will only dispense to your own patients. It is recommended that a clinic stock its 30 to 40 most commonly prescribed generic medications. The 80/20 rule applies here: by stocking about 20% of the total medications you prescribe, you will capture 80% of your prescriptions in-office.

Q: How much time does it take to dispense?

A: Not much at all. Whether you use the manual or electronic tracking system, the entire process takes on average less than a minute. Northwind ready-to-dispense packaging and labeling makes it fast and easy.

Q: Which types of practices are best for dispensing?

A: Common dispensing practices include:

  • Primary Care
  • Occupational Health
  • Pediatrics
  • Urgent Care
  • Orthopedic
  • Student Health Centers
  • Weight Management
  • Worksite Clinics

Q: How can dispensing help my patients?

A: Point of care dispensing makes it very convenient for the patient to pick up their prescriptions right away. Selling from your office allows low costs for all patients, even those that are uninsured. In many cases, offering prescriptions at the clinic level has increased medication compliance among patients.

Q: How much can I earn by adding dispensing to my practice?

A: Additional revenue will depend on your practice size and your willingness to promote your dispensing services. The average physician sees about 33 patients a day and writes 30+ prescriptions per day. Earning $5-$10 per prescription, it can quickly add up.

Q: Can we directly buy our meds from Northwind Pharmaceuticals?

A: Yes, we can supply any FDA approved drug.

Q: Do I need a special license to dispense?

A: Some states require a dispensing license. Most states allow practitioner dispensing under your medical license.
