Dispensing Regulations: It’s Better than you Think

Dispensing-Regulations-Its-Better-than-you-Think.UPDATED: June 2, 2018

When it comes to in-house dispensing, it may surprise you to know that in many states, the license to dispense is a part of the physician’s medical license. While regulations vary from state to state, you may find that adding dispensing to your clinic is easier than you thought.

For example, dispensing in Indiana is allowed under the Indiana Legend Drug Act, IC 16-42-19. In.gov details the act which “allows specific Indiana practitioners to dispense legend drugs directly to their patients in the course of their professional practice.”

Who can dispense?

What can be dispensed?

According to in.gov, “As long as the labeling requirements and reporting requirements (if dispensing controls) are met, an Indiana practitioner may dispense any legend drug they are allowed to prescribe under their:

  • Indiana professional license;
  • CSR and DEA registrations (if dispensing controlled substances); and/or
  • Collaborative practice agreement (if this is required to prescribe)”

Are there any label requirements?

Any dispensed medications must be labeled with:

  • The directions for use of the drug.
  • The name and address of the practitioner.
  • The name of the patient.
  • If the drug is prescribed for an animal, a statement of the species of the animal.

Not every state handles in-office dispensing the same way. Contact one of our account managers to help identify the requirements for your state.
